Calva Island
Calva Island is a small island in the northern Adriatic Sea, within the Kvarner archipelago off the Croatian coast, in the waters around the larger islands of Cres and Lošinj. Like many islets of this group, it is a low, rocky landform shaped by the sea and the strong local winds. Its name reflects the bare, scrub-covered character typical of the smaller islands in this part of the Adriatic.

Overview
Calva Island lies among the many islands and islets of the Kvarner gulf, near Cres and Lošinj. Such islands are characterised by limestone (karst) terrain, thin soils and exposure to the open sea. The island is part of a maritime landscape long travelled by Adriatic sailors and fishermen.
History
The waters of the Kvarner archipelago have been navigated since antiquity, linking the Istrian and Dalmatian coasts. Small islands like Calva served as navigational markers and shelter for vessels along these routes. Over the centuries the area passed through the spheres of various Adriatic powers before becoming part of modern Croatia.
What you see
The island presents a low, rocky profile with sparse Mediterranean vegetation and a stony, indented shoreline. Surrounding it are the clear waters of the northern Adriatic and views toward the neighbouring islands. Its small size and exposure give it a wild, uninhabited appearance.
Cultural significance
As one of the islets of the Kvarner archipelago, Calva Island forms part of a maritime cultural landscape shaped by centuries of Adriatic navigation, fishing and island life. It contributes to the natural heritage of this much-visited stretch of the Croatian coast.
Practical information
Small uninhabited islands are generally visited only by boat and may have no facilities. Check official Croatian tourist and maritime sources for access, anchoring and any protection rules before approaching.
Getting there
The island is reached by boat from the harbours of Cres, Lošinj or the nearby mainland coast. The principal gateways to the Kvarner region are the ports and the airport serving Rijeka and the surrounding area.
