Calamosche Beach

Calamosche is a small sheltered beach inside the Riserva naturale orientata Oasi Faunistica di Vendicari, on the south-eastern coast of Sicily near Noto, in the Province of Syracuse. Set within one of Sicily’s most important coastal wetlands, it is reached only on foot along a path through the reserve, which has helped preserve its undeveloped character.

Overview

Calamosche is a sandy cove within the Vendicari reserve, a 1,512-hectare protected area near Noto and Pachino. It lies between two rocky headlands that frame a calm, shallow bay. Because it sits inside the reserve, access is on foot from a designated car park along a trail.

History

The beach forms part of a coastline protected since the establishment of the Vendicari reserve in 1984, opened to the public in 1989. The wider area preserves layers of the past, including remains from Ancient Greece and a Byzantine necropolis recorded within the reserve. Limiting development has kept the shoreline close to its historic natural state.

What you see

Visitors find a compact crescent of sand enclosed by low rocky outcrops and clear, sheltered water. The approach passes through the maquis and coastal habitats typical of the reserve. There are no permanent buildings on the beach itself, reflecting its protected status.

Cultural significance

Calamosche is one of the best-known stretches of the Vendicari reserve, an internationally recognised wetland and a key stopover for migratory birds. Its preservation illustrates how protected-area management can safeguard both natural habitats and the archaeological heritage of the south-eastern Sicilian coast.

Practical information

Access is via the Vendicari Nature Reserve. Opening hours and any seasonal restrictions follow the reserve’s schedule. Check the official website for current details before visiting.

Getting there

The nearest towns are Noto and Pachino in the Province of Syracuse. Reach the reserve by car along the Noto–Pachino coastal roads, then continue on foot from the marked car park along the trail to the beach.
