Calabria Region
Southern Italy’s southernmost mainland region, bordered by two seas and separated from Sicily by a narrow strait.
At a glance
Calabria occupies the toe of the Italian peninsula in the south. The region borders Basilicata to the north, with the Ionian Sea washing its eastern coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea its western shore. A maritime arm separates it from Sicily to the southwest.
History
In Roman times, the name Calabria originally referred to the Salento peninsula in what is now Puglia, whose inhabitants were called Calabri and Sallentini. Today’s Calabria was then known as Brutium, forming part of Regio III Lucania et Bruttii alongside the current Basilicata. The territorial designation shifted over centuries to its present boundaries.
What you see
Calabria’s landscape reflects its geography and history. The region encompasses five provinces: Cosenza, Reggio Calabria, Catanzaro, Crotone, and Vibo Valentia—each with distinct characteristics shaped by Mediterranean and Ionian influences.
Cultural significance
The region represents a crucial point in Mediterranean history and culture. Its dual coastlines, ancient Greek settlements, and strategic position between mainland Italy and Sicily make it integral to understanding southern Italian heritage and classical antiquity in the Italian peninsula.
