Cagliari Fair – International Fair of Sardinia

CAGLIARI, SARDEGNA

Cagliari Fair

Sardinia’s premier annual trade fair welcomes thousands of visitors and international vendors each year, showcasing modern pavilions and an energetic blend of commerce and cultural celebration.

At a glance

The Cagliari Fair occupies a significant venue in the city’s modern infrastructure, hosting exhibitions, trade shows, and seasonal events. Its pavilions include notable examples of twentieth-century architecture. The fair operates as both a commercial platform and cultural gathering space for the island.

History

Cagliari has hosted commodity exhibitions since at least 1840. A major art and industry exhibition took place in February 1847, followed by trade fairs in 1901, 1904, 1905, and 1907 at Piazza del Carmine. From 1929, the Sardinian Spring event brought annual celebrations to the city. Following the destruction of World War II bombing in 1943, the 1st Sardinia Fair opened in 1948 at the Saint Remy bastion premises, attracting 55,000 visitors and signaling the region’s determination to rebuild. The second edition, hosted at the Massimo Theatre and garden arena, drew over 80,000 visitors and established the fair’s enduring importance. Young politician Giulio Andreotti attended this pivotal second edition, which showcased asbestos cement construction as a symbol of Sardinian renaissance.

What you see

The fairground features both permanent pavilions and temporary structures. Several pavilions represent significant modern architecture, including a noteworthy design by architect Adalberto Libera. The complex includes a large outdoor area accommodating vendors, seasonal amusement facilities, and open-air entertainment spaces. The layout accommodates hundreds of exhibitors and allows for flexible configuration depending on the event calendar.

Cultural significance

The fair holds symbolic weight in Sardinian postwar recovery and modern identity. It anchors the cultural calendar, particularly aligning with the Festival of Sant’Efisio (May 1–4), which has historically drawn concurrent exhibitions to the Stampace district. The event reflects the island’s economic aspirations and role as a Mediterranean trade hub.
