Overview
C-mine occupies the site of the former Winterslag coal mine in Genk. After the closure of the Limburg coalfield, the buildings were redeveloped into a centre for culture, creative industries and education. The site now combines exhibition spaces, a cultural centre, design studios and visitor attractions on a single former-industrial campus.
History
Coal mining shaped the region of Genk and the wider Limburg basin through the 20th century, drawing workers from across Europe. When the mines closed, the Winterslag colliery’s monumental headframes and engine halls were left as a powerful reminder of the industrial era. Rather than demolishing them, the city redeveloped the complex into C-mine, reusing the historic structures for new cultural purposes.
What you see
The most striking features are the two surviving steel headframes that once lowered miners underground, now landmarks of the site. The former machine halls and surrounding buildings house cultural venues, design education spaces and exhibition areas. A public square ties the buildings together, while interpretation routes recall the mine’s working past.
Cultural significance
C-mine is a leading example of industrial heritage reuse in Belgium, turning a closed coal mine into a thriving cultural destination. It preserves the memory of Limburg’s mining communities while positioning Genk as a centre for creative industries and design.
Practical information
C-mine is open to the public, with cultural events, exhibitions and a visitor experience exploring the former mine. Opening hours vary by venue and season. Check the official website for current programmes, guided tours and ticketing.
