History
Carefree, Arizona, was planned in the 1950s as a model desert community whose street names — Sundial Circle, Easy Street, Tranquil Trail — embodied the lifestyle its founders envisioned. The Boulders Resort grew from this ethos when developer Rusty Lyon opened the property in 1985 after years of planning that prioritised minimal disruption to the boulder landscape. The resort expanded steadily through the 1990s and 2000s, adding spa facilities and gaining national recognition for its environmental sensitivity. In 2015 it was incorporated into the Waldorf Astoria portfolio, aligning it with one of the world’s premier luxury hotel brands.

Getting there
The resort is approximately 45 minutes north of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) by car. Take the Pima Road or Scottsdale Road north through Scottsdale and continue to Carefree Highway (AZ-74) or Tom Darlington Drive. A rental car is the practical choice as public transit does not serve Carefree. The resort offers airport transfer services for guests arriving at PHX or Scottsdale Airport (SDL).
