Bubbio Castle stands on a promontory overlooking the village of Bubbio, roughly 60 kilometres southeast of Turin and 25 kilometres southeast of Asti. The surrounding landscape — part of the Langhe hills — is characterised by vineyards and forested ridges that have preserved much of their medieval character. The castle forms one of a chain of hilltop strongholds that once guarded the feudal territories of the Marquessate of Monferrato and the Bishop of Asti.
History
The origins of fortification at Bubbio trace to the early medieval period, when controlling the Bormida valley routes was strategically important for local lords. The site passed through the hands of various Piedmontese noble families over the centuries, each leaving modifications to the fabric of the structure.
