Bubbio Castle
Bubbio Castle is a medieval fortification rising above the small comune of Bubbio in the Province of Asti, southern Piedmont. Perched on a hillside surrounded by the Langa vineyards, it commands an expansive view over the Bormida di Millesimo valley. The structure reflects centuries of feudal history in a region where wine, stone towers, and aristocratic rivalries shaped the landscape.

Overview
Bubbio Castle stands on a promontory overlooking the village of Bubbio, roughly 60 kilometres southeast of Turin and 25 kilometres southeast of Asti. The surrounding landscape — part of the Langhe hills — is characterised by vineyards and forested ridges that have preserved much of their medieval character. The castle forms one of a chain of hilltop strongholds that once guarded the feudal territories of the Marquessate of Monferrato and the Bishop of Asti.
History
The origins of fortification at Bubbio trace to the early medieval period, when controlling the Bormida valley routes was strategically important for local lords. The site passed through the hands of various Piedmontese noble families over the centuries, each leaving modifications to the fabric of the structure. Like many castles in the Province of Asti, Bubbio’s fortification was gradually transformed from a purely defensive structure into a more residential seat as feudal conflict gave way to agricultural lordship during the 15th and 16th centuries.
What you see
The castle presents a compact silhouette typical of smaller Piedmontese hill fortifications, with masonry walls adapted over time to changing defensive needs. Surviving elements may include corner towers, cortile spaces, and remnants of the original keep. The immediate surroundings feature the characteristic terraced hillside of the Langa landscape, offering long views toward the Apennine foothills to the south and the Po plain to the north.
Cultural significance
Bubbio Castle belongs to the dense network of medieval strongholds that gives the Province of Asti its distinctive feudal character, complementing the region’s UNESCO-recognised wine landscape. It is a reference point for local identity and contributes to heritage tourism in an area celebrated equally for its archaeological and enological heritage.
