Brunate Chapel
The Brunate Chapel — dedicated to Sant’Andrea — is a historic hilltop sanctuary above the town of Brunate in the province of Como, Lombardy, perched at an elevation that commands sweeping panoramic views over Lake Como and the surrounding pre-Alpine landscape. Brunate itself, reached by the historic funicular from Como, has long attracted visitors and summer residents for its belle-époque villas, cool mountain air, and proximity to the lake, and its chapel is a landmark of the hilltop community.

Overview
Brunate is a small comune in the province of Como, some 50 kilometres northeast of Milan, situated at approximately 720 metres above sea level on the hills rising steeply from the western shore of Lake Como. The town’s chapel — one of several religious buildings in this compact hilltop community — reflects the long tradition of alpine sanctuaries in the Lombardy pre-Alps, where hilltop chapels served both local communities and pilgrims travelling the ancient routes between the Po plain and the Alpine passes. Brunate attracts significant summer tourism, arriving chiefly via the Como–Brunate funicular inaugurated in 1894.
History
The religious history of Brunate intertwines with the broader tradition of Christian sanctuaries on the hills surrounding Lake Como, where chapels and oratories marked ancient routes and provided focal points for community worship from the early medieval period onward. Brunate’s elevated position made it a natural site for a hilltop place of worship visible from the lake below. The town gained wider prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the construction of the funicular (1894) made it easily accessible to Como residents and tourists, spurring the construction of the belle-époque villas that still characterise its streets. The chapel was integrated into this flourishing resort community as its historic spiritual centre.
What you see
The chapel sits within the compact hilltop fabric of Brunate, its facade typically modest and in keeping with the local vernacular religious architecture of the Lombard pre-Alps. The interior preserves votive offerings, devotional paintings, and decorative elements accumulated over generations of local worship. The surrounding streets of Brunate display a notable concentration of early 20th-century liberty-style villas and alpine residences, making a visit to the chapel naturally part of a broader architectural and landscape walk through the town. From the hill above Brunate, the lighthouse dedicated to Alessandro Volta — a landmark visible from much of the lake — adds a further point of historical interest.
Cultural significance
Brunate’s chapel represents the continuity of hilltop religious traditions in the Lake Como landscape, a region whose sacred geography — from the early Christian basilicas of Como to the sacri monti of Lombardy and Piedmont — reflects two millennia of devotional practice. As Brunate transitions from a 19th-century resort to a 21st-century destination for Lake Como visitors, its chapel remains a living anchor of local identity and community history.
