Bottega Orafa
Bottega Orafa is a traditional goldsmith workshop in the historic centre of Alghero, on the north-western coast of Sardinia. The name, literally goldsmith workshop, identifies it as a working atelier rather than simply a retail jewellery shop, reflecting a craft tradition that Alghero has sustained since the medieval period. Operating within a city renowned for its Sardinian red coral and its Catalan cultural heritage, the workshop produces and sells handcrafted pieces that draw on centuries of local artisan knowledge.

Overview
Alghero historic centre has been shaped by centuries of Catalan influence, beginning with the Aragonese conquest of 1353, which established a Catalan-speaking colony that persists to this day in the town dialect, architecture and customs. Within this distinctive cultural context, craft workshops, particularly those working in gold, silver and coral, have long held a central place in the town economy and identity. Bottega Orafa represents this living tradition, offering visitors a direct encounter with working craft practice in a city where artisan culture remains commercially and culturally significant.
History
Goldsmithing in Sardinia has roots that extend to the Nuragic Bronze Age, when Sardinian craftspeople produced some of the finest metalwork in the ancient Mediterranean. Alghero Catalan settlers brought their own sophisticated goldsmithing traditions from the Crown of Aragon, fusing them with existing Sardinian techniques. The exploitation of Corallium rubrum (red coral) from the waters off Cape Coral, north of Alghero, gave the town a unique raw material that became central to its luxury craft identity. By the 18th and 19th centuries, Alghero coral and gold jewellery was exported across Europe; today, boutique workshops keep this heritage alive within the old city walls, adapting traditional forms for contemporary tastes.
What you see
The bottega presents finished goldsmith pieces, including rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants and brooches, alongside the tools and benches of the working studio. Some pieces feature Sardinian red coral set in gold or silver; others draw on traditional Sardinian filigree techniques, in which fine threads of metal are twisted and soldered into intricate lace-like patterns. The workshop setting in the historic centre places it within easy walking distance of Alghero 16th-century city walls, the Cathedral of Santa Maria and the seafront promenade, making it a natural stop on any cultural itinerary of the town.
Cultural significance
The goldsmith workshop tradition in Alghero is recognised as part of Sardinia intangible cultural heritage, linking the island ancient metallurgical history to its contemporary artisan economy. Certification schemes now protect genuine Sardinian coral products from cheaper imitations, adding value to workshops that can demonstrate authentic local craft origins. Ateliers like Bottega Orafa function simultaneously as commercial enterprises and as informal cultural institutions, preserving manual knowledge that would otherwise be lost to industrial production.
