Bo Palace
The historic seat of the University of Padua, Bo Palace has anchored one of Europe’s most prestigious academic institutions for over five centuries.
At a glance
Bo Palace (Palazzo del Bo) serves as the principal headquarters of the University of Padua, housing the Rectorate, the School of Law, and the world’s oldest Anatomical Theater. The building remains an active center of university life while welcoming visitors through guided tours daily.
History
The University of Padua was founded in 1222 by scholars and teachers fleeing the University of Bologna. By the time the institution relocated to the Bo in 1493, it had evolved into one of Europe’s largest and most internationally renowned universities, attracting foreign students from across the Italian peninsula.
The 20th century brought dramatic transformation. Between 1932 and the 1930s, under Rector Carlo Anti, major renovation and expansion works demolished surrounding buildings to create the “New Courtyard” (also called the “Littorio Courtyard”). Architect Gio Ponti and numerous artists of the period contributed sculptures and frescoes to the new wing.
What you see
The palace combines medieval and 20th-century elements. The historic core reflects centuries of academic use, while the New Courtyard expansion articulates modern spaces for academic apartments and administrative functions. Decorative interventions by Ponti and contemporary artists distinguish the newer wing.
Within the palace stands the Anatomical Theater, the oldest surviving example of its kind in the world—a testament to the University’s leadership in medical education and anatomical study.
Cultural significance
Bo Palace embodies the continuity and prestige of European higher education. The University of Padua educated mathematicians, physicians, and philosophers who shaped intellectual history; the building itself documents the physical expansion required to sustain that growth. The Anatomical Theater represents a crucial innovation in medical pedagogy and scientific practice.
