Overview

The University of Macerata is a public university located in the historic centre of Macerata, in the Marche region of central Italy. Founded in 1290, it is one of the oldest universities in Europe still in operation and the only Italian university to focus entirely on the humanities and social sciences. The Bertelli Educational Center houses the Department of Education Sciences, Cultural Heritage and Tourism, one of the university’s key faculties for professional training in heritage management and tourism.

History

The University of Macerata traces its origins to a studium generale established in 1290, predating many of Europe’s most celebrated institutions of higher learning. Located in a mid-sized hill town in the Marche, the university developed a strong tradition in law and the humanities over the following centuries. In the modern era, it reorganised its faculties around its core strengths, becoming the only Italian university to concentrate exclusively on the humanities and social sciences, a distinction that has shaped its national and international profile in cultural heritage education.

What you see

The Bertelli Educational Center occupies a building within Macerata’s compact historic centre, a city whose streets retain their medieval and Renaissance street plan set on a ridge overlooking the Chienti valley. The university’s various faculty buildings are distributed across the town, integrated into the urban fabric rather than gathered on a single campus, giving the city a distinctly academic atmosphere. Macerata itself is known for its Renaissance loggia, its open-air opera arena (Sferisterio), and its well-preserved historic core.

Cultural significance

As the home of one of Italy’s oldest universities and its sole institution dedicated entirely to the humanities, Macerata holds a distinctive place in Italian academic culture. The Department of Cultural Heritage and Tourism trains professionals who go on to work across Italy’s rich network of museums, archaeological sites, and heritage institutions, making the Bertelli Center a hub for the study and preservation of Italian cultural patrimony.
