Overview

Set in the pre-Alpine lake district of Lombardy near Lake Maggiore, B&B Polidora occupies a landscape long celebrated for its scenic beauty and its dense concentration of cultural heritage. The Province of Varese, where the property is located, encompasses the southern shore of Lake Maggiore, the shores of Lake Varese and Lake Lugano, and a mosaic of historic towns, Romanesque and Renaissance churches, and Liberty-era villas. The area has attracted aristocratic and bourgeois visitors since the 18th century, when the Grand Tour brought northern European travellers through the Italian lakes region.

History

The territory around Lake Maggiore has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with successive layers of Celtic, Roman, Lombard, and medieval settlement. During the Renaissance, the Borromeo family transformed the Borromean Islands into one of the most celebrated garden complexes in Italy, setting a standard of refined lakeside living that subsequent centuries continued. The 19th and early 20th centuries brought a wave of Liberty-style villa construction by industrialists and aristocrats from across Europe, giving the lake shores an architectural character that remains largely intact. Small hospitality properties in the area now welcome a new generation of visitors drawn to this layered heritage.

What you see

Guests at B&B Polidora have access to the natural and cultural attractions of the Varese lake district. Within easy reach are the shores and promenades of Lake Maggiore, the celebrated Borromean Islands with their Baroque palaces and terraced gardens, and the historic centre of Varese with its 18th-century bishop’s palace and sacro monte pilgrimage complex. The surrounding countryside is characterised by wooded hills, Liberty villas glimpsed through garden gates, and small Romanesque churches that speak to the deep medieval roots of the territory.

Cultural significance

The Lake Maggiore area and the Province of Varese contain a remarkable concentration of heritage assets, from the Borromean Islands’ UNESCO-associated landscape to the Sacro Monte di Varese, one of nine Piedmontese and Lombard sacri monti inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. B&B Polidora’s location makes it a convenient and characterful base for discovering this heritage in depth.
