Overview
Bard is a town and comune in the Aosta Valley region of north-western Italy, with a population of around 134. It is part of the Unité des communes valdôtaines du Mont-Rose and is one of I Borghi più belli d’Italia. The village is best known for Fort Bard, the fortified complex that towers above it.
History
Bard guards a strategic narrow point at the entrance to the Aosta Valley, long controlling movement up the valley toward the Alpine passes. Fort Bard (Forte di Bard) was built in the 19th century by the House of Savoy on a rocky prominence above the town, replacing earlier fortifications on the site. After many years of neglect the fort was completely restored and, in 2006, reopened to visitors.
What you see
The village clusters at the foot of the rock crowned by Fort Bard, its narrow streets lined with historic stone houses. The fort itself is a layered complex of ramparts and buildings reached by lift and walkways. Since its restoration it houses the Museum of the Alps and hosts art exhibitions, while the main courtyard stages musical and theatrical performances in summer.
Cultural significance
Bard combines a recognised “most beautiful village” with a major restored Savoy fortress, making it one of the cultural landmarks of the Aosta Valley. The Museum of the Alps within the fort interprets the natural and human history of the mountains.
Practical information
