Overview

Florence (Firenze), capital of Tuscany, is regarded as one of the birthplaces of the Italian Renaissance and contains one of the world’s highest concentrations of historically significant art and architecture within its medieval and Renaissance urban fabric. The Lungarno embankments, running along both banks of the Arno, are among the most scenic urban promenades in Italy, lined with Renaissance palaces, historic hotels, and antique dealers. The Baglioni brand, founded in Bologna in 1912, represents one of Italy’s long-standing luxury hotel families with properties in key Italian cultural cities.

History

The Lungarno district developed its present character from the 13th century onward, when Florentine merchant families built palaces along the river to display their wealth and oversee trade. The embankments took their current form in the 19th century following urban improvement schemes under the Savoy monarchy, when Florence briefly served as capital of unified Italy (1865–1871). Grand hotels along the Lungarno became fashionable in the late 19th century, catering to wealthy travellers on the Grand Tour and the growing international élite drawn to Florence’s incomparable artistic inheritance.

What you see

The hotel’s position on the Lungarno offers views across the Arno to the Oltrarno district and the hills of Fiesole and Arcetri beyond. The immediate neighbourhood encompasses the Ponte Vecchio, lined with goldsmiths’ shops since the 16th century, the Uffizi Gallery, Piazza della Signoria, and the Palazzo Pitti. The streetscape combines Renaissance palace architecture with the elegant 19th-century interventions that shaped the city’s embankment character, creating one of the most photographed urban landscapes in Europe.

Cultural significance

Florence’s historic centre was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982, recognised as an outstanding example of the urban and architectural expression of the Renaissance. The Lungarno’s grand hotels have historically been gathering points for artists, writers, and intellectuals, with figures including Henry James, E.M. Forster, and countless others who found inspiration in the Florentine landscape and its proximity to the greatest concentrations of Renaissance art. A stay in a Lungarno hotel thus connects guests to a long tradition of cultural travel to one of Italy’s most significant heritage sites.
