Overview
The ArtScience Museum sits within Marina Bay Sands, one of Singapore’s most recognisable developments, on the edge of Marina Bay in the Downtown Core. It is the largest private museum in Singapore and one of the most-visited cultural venues in the country. The museum was inaugurated on 17 February 2011 by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and has since hosted major international touring exhibitions alongside its permanent galleries.
History
The ArtScience Museum was conceived as a cultural centrepiece of the Marina Bay Sands development, which opened its casino and hotel towers in April 2010. Architect Moshe Safdie designed the museum building to resemble a lotus flower or an outstretched hand welcoming visitors from the waterfront. The museum building opened to the public in February 2011, completing the landmark integrated resort complex. Since opening it has hosted landmark exhibitions on topics ranging from Da Vinci and Titanic artefacts to digital art installations by teamLab.
What you see
The museum’s exterior is one of Singapore’s most photographed architectural forms — a white structure of ten “fingers” that curve inward and upward, with an open oculus at the apex that funnels natural light and rainwater into a central atrium pool below. Inside, twenty-one gallery spaces spread across three levels accommodate large-scale travelling and permanent exhibitions. The Future World permanent gallery by teamLab features immersive digital nature environments that have become iconic in their own right.
Cultural significance
The ArtScience Museum is a key institution in Singapore’s strategy to position the city-state as a global hub for culture, creativity, and innovation. Its programming deliberately bridges disciplines — connecting art history, natural sciences, technology, and popular culture — in a format accessible to broad audiences. The building itself is recognised internationally as an architectural landmark that has redefined Marina Bay’s waterfront identity.
