Artenatura Villaga
Artenatura Villaga is a site in the municipality of Villaga, in the Berici Hills (Colli Berici) south of Vicenza in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, at approximately 45.412° N, 11.509° E. The name combines “arte” (art) and “natura” (nature), pointing to an integrated approach to landscape and artistic creation characteristic of several Veneto cultural initiatives that use the region’s distinctive limestone hill terrain as the setting for sculpture, land art, and environmental installations. Villaga itself is a small comune whose territory is shaped by the calcareous plateaux and wooded slopes of the Berici Hills, a protected natural area of significant ecological and archaeological interest.

Overview
Artenatura Villaga sits within the Colli Berici, a range of limestone hills rising to the south of Vicenza that the Veneto regional government has designated as a protected natural area. The site engages the tradition — well established across northern Italy — of using rural and natural landscapes as outdoor galleries where sculpture and installation art dialogue with the existing terrain. The Berici Hills are dotted with Palladian villas, rural chapels, and prehistoric cave sites, giving any cultural initiative in the area a dense historical backdrop against which contemporary creativity unfolds.
History
Villaga and the surrounding Berici territory have been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement in the limestone caves and hillside terraces of the area. During the Roman period the hills supplied the fine “Pietra di Vicenza” limestone used widely in regional architecture, including several Palladian buildings in Vicenza itself. The contemporary art-and-nature concept at Villaga builds on this long tradition of human engagement with the Berici landscape, reimagining it through the lens of 21st-century environmental and artistic practice.
What you see
Visitors to Artenatura Villaga encounter a landscape of wooded hillsides, limestone outcrops, and cultivated terraces set within the distinctive panorama of the Veneto plain viewed from the Berici heights. Art works and installations — varying by season and programme — are positioned to interact with natural light, terrain, and vegetation rather than to compete with them. The broader Berici Hills offer walking trails, views toward the Euganean Hills and the Alps, and the rural vernacular architecture of small Vicentine hill communes.
Cultural significance
The Colli Berici are part of the broader cultural landscape of the Vicenza area, a territory of outstanding UNESCO heritage value that includes the Palladian villas of the Veneto listed since 1994. Initiatives such as Artenatura Villaga extend the region’s cultural vocation into contemporary practice, maintaining the dialogue between human creativity and the natural environment that has defined the Veneto landscape since antiquity.
