Overview
Arco is a comune in Trentino-Alto Adige, in northern Italy. The town is faced on one side by sheer limestone cliffs jutting up like a wall, protecting it and its ancient hilltop castle. King Francis II of the Two Sicilies, the last Bourbon king of Naples, died here in 1894.
History
Arco grew beneath its castle, the Castello di Arco, which crowns the rocky spur above the town and controlled the Sarca valley toward Lake Garda. In the 19th century, under Austrian rule, the town’s mild climate made it a fashionable winter health resort, drawing aristocratic and imperial visitors. It became part of Italy after the First World War.
What you see
The ruined Castello di Arco stands dramatically on its cliff above the centre, offering wide views over the Sarca valley. Below, the town preserves its historic streets, the collegiate church and the Arboretum, a botanical park planted during the resort era. Mediterranean and exotic vegetation thrives in the sheltered, sunny climate.
Cultural significance
Arco embodies the meeting of medieval Alpine fortification and Belle Époque resort culture. Its castle, parks and the memory of imperial guests, including the death of Francis II of the Two Sicilies here in 1894, make it a distinctive heritage town near Lake Garda.
Practical information
The historic centre and Arboretum park are freely accessible year-round; the castle is open as a monument with seasonal hours. Check the official town website for opening times and events.
Getting there
Arco has no railway station of its own; the nearest is Rovereto or Mori, connected by bus. The town lies a few kilometres north of Riva del Garda and is reached by car via the SS45bis and SS240 roads through the Sarca valley.
