Andrich House Museum

TORCELLO, VENETO · 1950s–1980s

Andrich House Museum

The only house museum on Torcello preserves decades of artistic practice by painters and sculptors Clementina De Luca and Lucio Andrich, offering insight into the island’s cultural life and lagoon landscape.

At a glance

A private residence-turned-museum in a naturalistic setting overlooking the Palude della Rosa marshes. The house contains works in multiple media—paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glass, textiles, engravings, and decorative objects—spanning five decades of creative output. The surrounding gardens and lagoon ecosystem remain central to the experience.

History

The house belonged to artists Clementina De Luca and Lucio Andrich, who established a creative refuge on Torcello away from Venice’s urban center. The property attracted cultural visitors throughout the mid-to-late twentieth century and later became a venue for television production. Today it operates as Torcello’s sole house museum dedicated to twentieth-century artistic practice.

What you see

The residence itself sits suspended between earth and sky, overlooking extensive marshlands. Its rooms display the full range of the artists’ materials and techniques: paintings and sculptures alongside ceramics, glasswork, silks, jewelry, wooden pieces, engravings, tapestries, and period furniture. Surrounding gardens planted with grapes, lavender, rosemary, and artichokes provide habitat for herons, ducks, and migratory birds visible at low tide across the exposed velma and sandbanks.

Cultural significance

The museum documents the artistic effervescence of the 1950s through 1980s through the work of two committed practitioners. Its location on Torcello—historically a center of Venetian culture—traces the lagoon’s transformation from the ancient settlement of Altino through the island’s decline and modern revival. The house exemplifies how artists sought refuge and inspiration in the Venetian landscape.
