AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS · 1926–PRESENT

Amsterdams Museum

A repository of Amsterdam’s urban story, from medieval foundations to contemporary life, housed in a transformed 16th-century orphanage at the heart of the city’s oldest quarter.

At a glance

The Amsterdams Museum traces the capital’s evolution across nearly nine centuries through paintings, archaeological artifacts, photographs, and objects of daily life. The collection encompasses 70,000 pieces, with approximately 25,000 digitized and publicly accessible online. Its home—a landmark civic building on the boundary between Kalverstraat and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal—carries its own architectural significance.

History

Founded in 1926, the museum originally occupied the Waag, Amsterdam’s 15th-century city gate. In 1975, it relocated to its current building, erected in 1580 as the municipal orphanage. The structure underwent major expansion by Hendrick and Pieter de Keyser before Jacob van Campen redesigned it in 1634. The orphanage remained operational until 1960, after which the building transitioned to cultural use.

What you see

The museum occupies a three-story Renaissance structure, substantially modified in the 17th century. Visitors encounter authentic orphanage furnishings alongside period galleries presenting the city’s transformation. Displays range from conventional—paintings and archaeological finds—to the unexpected: a playable music box, a Witkar (an experimental 1960s ecological vehicle), and a replica of Café ‘t Mandje, the historic Light District pub where prostitutes, pimps, sailors, and lesbian women gathered.

Cultural significance

The museum’s collection documents Amsterdam’s rise from medieval trading settlement to global metropolis. Its holdings on the Raspa house—the former correctional facility where prisoners shaved wood—illuminate lesser-known aspects of civic history. The building itself embodies Amsterdam’s architectural evolution and the city’s pragmatic approach to heritage conservation.
