Alpe del Nevegàl
Alpe del Nevegàl is a highland plateau rising above Belluno in the eastern Veneto, at the southern fringe of the Dolomites. Sitting at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level on the slopes of Monte Faverghera, it is a four-season destination: a ski area in winter and a botanical garden, hiking and paragliding base in summer. Its panoramic position gives clear views south over the Piave valley and north toward the snow-capped peaks of the Bellunese Dolomites.

Overview
Alpe del Nevegàl sits on the ridge separating the Piave valley from the Val Belluna, giving it an exceptional panoramic position that has made it the natural outdoor amphitheatre for Belluno’s residents. The area encompasses a ski resort with chairlifts connecting the valley to the plateau, a nature reserve protecting sub-alpine and alpine flora, and the Giardino Botanico delle Alpi Orientali, one of the most important botanical gardens of the Eastern Alps. A cable car and road both link the plateau to Belluno just 8 kilometres to the north-east.
History
The plateau was historically used as a malga — alpine summer pasture — by Belluno farmers who grazed cattle on the high meadows between June and September. During the twentieth century the area was progressively developed as a leisure destination: ski lifts were installed from the 1950s onwards, and in 1972 the Giardino Botanico delle Alpi Orientali was established to protect and study the remarkable variety of alpine species native to the Eastern Dolomites. The botanical garden now manages over 1,000 plant species across its themed sections and serves as a research station for alpine ecology.
What you see
The plateau opens onto sweeping meadows ringed by conifer forest, with the rocky crests of Monte Faverghera and surrounding summits visible above. In summer the meadows are carpeted with wildflowers; the botanical garden showcases labelled collections of alpine plants arranged by habitat zone from montane to nival. In winter, groomed ski pistes descend through the forest back toward Belluno, with snowshoeing and cross-country trails branching off from the main runs. Rifugi and mountain huts on the plateau serve traditional Venetian mountain food year-round.
Cultural significance
The Giardino Botanico delle Alpi Orientali at Nevegàl is one of the most biodiverse botanical collections in the Alpine arc, hosting species from all the vegetation zones of the Eastern Alps including endemic rarities of the Dolomites. The area is part of the wider Belluno Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage landscape and exemplifies the relationship between traditional pastoral culture and the dramatic mountain environment of the Veneto.
