Alfa Romeo Historical Museum
An exhibition space documenting nearly a century of Italian automotive innovation, from production cars and racing models to prototypes and concept vehicles.
At a glance
The Alfa Romeo Historical Museum occupies 4,800 square metres across six floors within the former Arese production plant. The collection includes 256 cars and 150 historic engines spanning the manufacturer’s full range—from automobiles and commercial vehicles to locomotives, tractors, buses, and aircraft propulsion systems. Today, approximately 69 specimens are displayed to the public, with 60 per cent remaining functional.
History
Inaugurated on 18 December 1976 by Gaetano Cortesi, then president and CEO of Alfa Romeo, the museum was strongly supported by Giuseppe Luraghi. The complex occupies land where car production ceased in 2002 and engine manufacturing ended in 2005, after which industrial activity at the site closed entirely.
What you see
Architects Vito and Gustavo Latis designed the museum alongside the adjacent Centro Direzionale. Four thematic areas across the six floors present the breadth of Alfa Romeo production. The collection features at least one model of each car assembled by the company, alongside racing vehicles, prototypes, and concept cars. Many pieces are unique. The museum also maintains an extensive archive of vintage photographs and promotional posters gathered by Alfa Romeo’s Historical Documentation Center.
Cultural significance
The museum documents the evolution of one of Italy’s most prestigious automotive manufacturers. Its comprehensive collection—from early production vehicles to advanced prototypes—illustrates the company’s technical achievements and design innovation across nearly a century. The preservation of both functional and static specimens reflects Alfa Romeo’s sustained engineering excellence.
