Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata

A contemporary institution supporting artistic education alongside the region’s university heritage.

At a glance

The Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata opened in 1972 to provide advanced artistic training within a region with centuries of cultural tradition. The institution has occupied two significant locations across its history, reflecting both the city’s architectural patrimony and its capacity for adaptation.

History

Founded in 1972, the Academy was established to complement Macerata’s university with dedicated fine arts instruction. Its original seat was Palazzo Buonaccorsi, a historic palazzo that anchored the institution for over two decades. Following the earthquake that struck Umbria and Marche in 1997, the Academy relocated to the former convent of the Capuchin nuns, where it continues to operate today.

What you see

The Academy’s current home is a former religious convent, converted to serve contemporary educational purposes. The building retains the architectural character of its monastic origins while functioning as a modern teaching space for studio work, exhibitions, and academic programs.

Cultural significance

The Academy represents the ongoing investment in artistic education within the Marche region. Its establishment in 1972 reflected broader Italian efforts to decentralize higher arts education beyond major urban centers, enabling students across the peninsula to pursue advanced training closer to home.
