Academy of Arcadia
One of Italy’s oldest and most influential literary academies, founded in 1690 and housed at the Angelica Library. The Academy preserves centuries of Italian intellectual and artistic heritage.
At a glance
The Academy of Arcadia represents a continuous tradition of literary and cultural activity spanning more than three centuries. Its collections—books, archives, and paintings—document the evolution of Italian intellectual life from the late 17th century onward.
History
The first gathering of the Arcadi took place on 5 October 1690 in the garden of the convent of San Pietro in Montorio. Fourteen writers participated, among them Giovan Mario Crescimbeni, appointed the Academy’s first General Custodian. The founding represented an ideal continuation of the intellectual circles held in the Roman palace of Queen Christina of Sweden, who had died the previous year.
The Academy’s historical residence, Bosco Parrasio, has been leased to private individuals for many years. Today, the institution’s archives and library are housed at the Angelica Library, while its Picture Gallery resides at the Museum of Rome.
What you see
The Academy’s presence at the Angelica Library offers access to its extensive collection of books and archival materials. The Picture Gallery, held separately at the Museum of Rome, documents visual culture connected to the Academy’s members and patrons across centuries.
Cultural significance
The Academy of Arcadia shaped Italian literary culture through the 18th and 19th centuries, influencing poetic taste and intellectual discourse. Its publications and ongoing scholarly activities maintain a bridge between historical tradition and contemporary cultural studies, demonstrating how a centuries-old institution remains engaged with both preservation and innovation.
