Van Gogh Museum

Home to the world’s largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and drawings, this Amsterdam institution preserves and exhibits the Dutch master’s artistic legacy across two architecturally distinct buildings.

At a glance

The Van Gogh Museum houses an unparalleled collection of works by one of history’s most influential painters. The institution actively engages in conservation, restoration, and acquisition efforts to safeguard and expand its holdings. Two interconnected buildings form the museum’s physical presence on Museumplein, creating a layered approach to displaying van Gogh’s oeuvre and related artistic movements.

History

The main building opened in 1973, designed by Gerrit Rietveld, a leading figure in Dutch modernist architecture. In 1999, Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa completed a new wing, extending the museum’s exhibition space. A modern entrance, finished in September 2015, improved visitor flow and practical connections between the Van Gogh Museum and its adjacent neighbors, the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum.

What you see

Rietveld’s original structure exemplifies Dutch functionalist design principles. Kurokawa’s addition introduces contemporary architectural language, creating dialogue between modernist and present-day approaches. The 2015 entrance redesign strengthens the visual and physical integration of the three major institutions along Museumplein, enhancing the visitor experience across the broader cultural precinct.

Cultural significance

The museum preserves approximately 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 750 letters by van Gogh, offering comprehensive insight into his artistic development and personal struggles. It serves as a research center and steward of van Gogh’s legacy, influencing global understanding of Post-Impressionism and modern art history. The institution’s commitment to restoration and conservation ensures these works remain accessible to future generations.
