Overview
Pesaro’s Pescheria occupies a central position in the city’s cultural life, bridging the historic commercial character of the building — pescheria means fish market in Italian — with a contemporary programme of visual arts. The city of Pesaro, on the Adriatic coast of the Marche region, is designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, reflecting its connection to Rossini and its active musical culture, but the Pescheria extends the cultural offer into the visual arts. The building’s open plan, derived from its market function, makes it a flexible venue for large-scale installations and group exhibitions.
History
Fish markets (pescherie) were standard fixtures of Italian coastal towns from the medieval period onward, typically occupying a prominent building near the main square or the port to facilitate the daily trade of fresh catch. Pesaro’s Pescheria was built in the 19th century as a purpose-designed market structure, reflecting the rationalised commercial architecture of the unified Italian state. As the city’s economic patterns changed during the 20th century and fish retailing moved to new locations, the historic building was identified as a candidate for cultural reuse. Its conversion into a visual arts centre was part of broader municipal efforts to activate historic buildings in Pesaro’s centro storico for cultural purposes.
What you see
The Pescheria retains its historic envelope — typically a single-storey or double-height structure with an open central hall, masonry walls, and large openings that once served the ventilation and display needs of a working market — adapted to provide neutral gallery space. The interior is configurable for diverse exhibition formats, from painting and sculpture to video installation and photography. The building’s location places it within easy walking distance of Pesaro’s main heritage sites, including the Museo Civici, the Rocca Costanza, and the Piazza del Popolo.
Cultural significance
The Pescheria represents the model of adaptive reuse of historic urban infrastructure for contemporary cultural purposes, a strategy widely adopted in Italian cities to sustain the vitality of historic centres. As part of Pesaro’s UNESCO Creative City of Music identity and its broader cultural programme, the venue contributes to the city’s positioning as a year-round cultural destination in the Marche region, extending its appeal beyond the Rossini Opera Festival (ROF) that draws international audiences each summer.

Getting there
Pesaro is served by Pesaro railway station on the Adriatic line (Bologna–Lecce), with frequent regional trains from Rimini (approximately 30 minutes) and Ancona (approximately 45 minutes). From the station, the historic centre and the Pescheria are approximately 15 minutes on foot or a short taxi ride. By car from Bologna, take the A14 motorway to the Pesaro exit. The city centre is largely ZTL (restricted traffic zone), so use peripheral car parks and walk in.
