Rocchetta Mattei
An eclectic fortress built by Count Cesare Mattei, blending medieval and Moorish styles on the northern Apennines, home to one of history’s most unconventional medical practitioners.
At a glance
Rocchetta Mattei stands at 407 metres above sea level in Savignano, a hilltop fortress that mixes architectural styles from different periods and cultures. Construction began in 1850 and the building became habitable by 1859. The castle served as both residence and treatment centre for Count Cesare Mattei’s controversial medical practice.
History
The first stone was laid on 5 November 1850, marking the beginning of an ambitious architectural project that would occupy the next decade. By 1859, Rocchetta Mattei was sufficiently complete for Count Mattei to establish it as his permanent home, never to leave again.
The fortress attracted visitors from across Europe, drawn by Mattei’s reputation as a healer. Among those who came to seek his treatment were Ludwig III of Bavaria and Tsar Alexander II. In 1925, the Prince of Piedmont made an official visit to the castle. The writer Fyodor Dostoevsky referenced Mattei in The Brothers Karamazov, mentioning that the count’s remedies had relieved him of severe rheumatism.
What you see
The building exemplifies 19th-century eclecticism, deliberately drawing from medieval fortification design and Moorish decorative traditions. This stylistic mixture reflects Mattei’s cosmopolitan worldview and his desire to create a space that felt both protective and exotic.
Within the castle walls, Mattei recreated the life of a medieval nobleman, even maintaining a courtyard complete with a jester—a theatrical touch that underscored his unconventional approach to both architecture and living.
Cultural significance
Rocchetta Mattei represents a fascinating chapter in the history of alternative medicine and 19th-century intellectual experimentation. Cesare Mattei, largely self-taught, developed electromeopathy, a therapeutic system rooted in homeopathic principles. His castle became a destination for those seeking remedies from established medicine’s failures.
The building itself stands as a monument to personal vision and eclectic taste—a physical manifestation of Mattei’s belief that healing could blend scientific inquiry with imaginative, even romantic, approaches to wellness and architecture.
