The Twelve Apostles

A series of dramatic limestone stacks rising nearly fifty meters from the Southern Ocean, sculpted over millions of years by relentless coastal erosion.

At a glance

The Twelve Apostles are a natural formation of limestone stacks located off the coast of Port Campbell National Park in Victoria, accessible via the Great Ocean Road. Their close proximity and striking silhouettes have made them one of Australia’s most visited natural attractions.

History

The formation began between 10 and 20 million years ago, when the stacks were part of the rocky shoreline. The Southern Ocean’s waves and adverse weather conditions initiated a slow erosion process that continues today. Caves formed first, followed by natural arches that eventually collapsed, leaving behind the isolated pillars visible now. Erosion remains active, wearing away the base of each stack at approximately two centimeters per year. On July 3, 2005, one of the nine remaining stacks collapsed into the ocean in less than a minute, observed by tourists who witnessed the dramatic event.

What you see

Each stack stands nearly fifty meters high, a testament to the limestone’s resistance to erosion. The formations display the characteristic layering and weathering patterns of coastal limestone, with wave-sculpted bases and irregular tops shaped by wind and weather. The ongoing geological process remains visible in the fresh fractures and weathered surfaces of the rock faces.

Cultural significance

The Twelve Apostles represent a living geological classroom, demonstrating the power of natural forces over vast timescales. Their accessibility via one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives has elevated them to iconic status in Australian tourism and landscape photography.
