Asiago
A high-altitude town on the Sette Comuni plateau, Asiago rose from total destruction in World War I to become one of Italy’s premier mountain destinations for winter sports and summer outdoor pursuits.
At a glance
Asiago sits at approximately 1,000 metres elevation on a plateau in northern Vicenza, bordering Trentino. The town anchors the Sette Comuni (Seven Municipalities) region and has evolved from a war-devastated settlement into a major centre for Nordic skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. Its name carries international recognition through its celebrated dairy products.
History
During the Spring Offensive of the First World War, Asiago lay in no man’s land between opposing forces. The town endured devastating bombardment that destroyed it completely. From this total ruin, Asiago rebuilt itself, eventually establishing its prominence as the principal centre of the Sette Comuni plateau and transforming into a thriving mountain resort.
What you see
The modern town reflects post-war reconstruction. Asiago’s landscape is defined by its dramatic alpine setting: to the north, a mountain range with peaks exceeding 2,000 metres (including Cima XII at the highest point); to the south, lower mountain chains. Extensive forests dominate both ranges—above 1,700–1,800 metres, mountain pine and larch predominate, while lower elevations support spruce, white fir, and beech woodlands.
Cultural significance
Asiago represents resilience and renewal in European heritage. Once the capital of the Regatta of the Seven Municipalities, it exemplifies how communities rebuild after catastrophic conflict. Today, it stands as a symbol of sustainable mountain tourism in the Alps, balancing seasonal recreation with cultural identity and food heritage.
