Rifugio Cinque Torri

A historic mountain refuge beneath the dramatic Five Towers of the Dolomites, hosting climbers and dignitaries since the early 20th century.

At a glance

Rifugio Cinque Torri stands at the foot of the 5 Torri, one of the Dolomites’ most iconic rock formations. The refuge opened in October 1904 and remains one of the area’s oldest structures. For nearly a century, it has served as a base for mountaineers and climbers seeking access to world-class alpine routes.

History

The refuge was inaugurated in October 1904, establishing itself quickly as a destination for climbers across Europe. It earned distinction as a stop for European nobility and dignitaries, particularly during the First World War period. In 1916, King Vittorio Emanuele III visited the refuge while touring the front lines, witnessing the explosion of the nearby Castelletto mine.

Since 1937, the Alberti family—known by the name “Lelo”—has managed the refuge, maintaining its operations across generations.

What you see

The refuge is positioned in dramatic mountain terrain at the base of the Five Towers formation. From this base, visitors gain access to dozens of climbing routes rated for all skill levels. The surrounding landscape encompasses an open-air museum documenting the First World War, with restored trenches and defensive positions visible throughout the area.

Cultural significance

The refuge represents a critical junction in Dolomite mountaineering history, bridging the early development of alpine climbing with the region’s more recent heritage. Its role hosting wartime visitors and witnessing military operations connects it to both European aristocracy and the Great War. The site anchors a landscape rich in both climbing culture and military archaeology.
