Villa Kechler de Asarta
An eighteenth-century villa set within three hectares of parkland, where nineteenth-century agricultural innovation met aristocratic design on the banks of the Tagliamento.
At a glance
Villa Kechler de Asarta occupies part of the Fraforeano Park, bordering the Tagliamento embankment. The estate combines a dominical house with flanking barchesse, traditional farm buildings, now owned by the Kechler family.
History
The site’s documented history begins in 1275, when the patriarch of Aquileia granted the Fefor di Fraforeano to the Counts of Varmo. The de Asarta family, a branch of Spanish nobility, acquired the estate in 1883 after establishing themselves in Italy around 1700. The Kechler family later inherited the villa and park through the de Asarta line, retaining ownership today.
What you see
The architectural complex centers on a dominical house flanked by barchesse—long agricultural buildings typical of Friuli estates. The structure underwent radical transformation in the second half of the nineteenth century under Vittorio de Asarta. These renovations reflected his modernization of the agricultural operations, introducing innovations in farm management that extended beyond the villa’s immediate aesthetic.
Cultural significance
Villa Kechler de Asarta represents a pivotal moment when European landed estates embraced industrial-era farming methods. The villa’s transformation documents the intersection of aristocratic patronage and agricultural progress in late-nineteenth-century Friuli Venezia Giulia, a region shaped by such technological and cultural shifts.
