Val Codera

A steep, remote valley in the Alps near Lake Como, Val Codera has inspired legend and harbored resistance for centuries. Its dramatic landscape and isolation have made it a place of both spiritual mystery and historical significance.

At a glance

Val Codera is an Alpine valley in the province of Sondrio, approximately 100 kilometers from Milan. Its rugged terrain and relative inaccessibility have shaped its character and attracted seekers of refuge throughout history. The valley opens toward Lake Como and remains one of the most evocative landscapes in the region.

History

According to local legend preserved in various historical texts and Giovanni Galli’s novel “The Island,” a priest fleeing the Lombard invasions of the sixth century may have hidden the Holy Grail within the valley. He had been traveling from Britain to Rome when forced to seek refuge along Lake Como, allegedly concealing the chalice in the Saas Carlasch, a prominent rocky formation. A subsequent landslide allegedly rendered the hiding place inaccessible.

In the twentieth century, Val Codera gained importance as a clandestine gathering place. During the Fascist period, when scouting organizations were outlawed, the “Stray Eagles”—an underground scout group—used the valley’s isolation for their activities. Gaetano Fracassi is credited with discovering the valley for this purpose in 1935.

What you see

The valley’s defining feature is its steep, dramatic topography. The Saas Carlasch, described as one of the most panoramic and evocative sites in the valley, dominates the landscape with its distinctive boulder-strewn formation. The rugged ravines and imposing mountainsides create an austere, almost otherworldly environment.

In the municipality of Novate Mezzola, traditional religious processions still occur four times yearly—on the feast days of St. Mark, St. John the Baptist, the Assumption of Mary, and St. Roch. During these events, sacred effigies are carried through the streets by brothers wearing scarlet tunics, maintaining centuries-old customs.

Cultural significance

Val Codera represents the intersection of natural wonder, spiritual legend, and modern historical resistance. Leonardo da Vinci himself remarked upon the valley’s wild character in his Codex Atlanticus, noting its apparent disorder—as if God had created it either first, in inexperience, or last, exhausted from creation.

The Holy Grail legend embedded in the valley’s identity connects it to broader European religious traditions and the Joseph of Arimathea narrative. Its role as a refuge for persecuted scouts during Fascism adds twentieth-century significance to its ancient mystique.
