Milan
Italy’s economic and cultural powerhouse, Milan converges centuries of history—from Roman Mediolanum to Renaissance duchy to modern fashion and design capital—within Europe’s second-largest metropolitan region.
At a glance
Milan is the capital of Lombardia and its metropolitan city, home to 1,368,590 residents across 181.8 km². Elevation 121 m. Patron saint: Saint Ambrose. The city anchors one of Europe’s most densely populated metropolitan areas and stands among the world’s four fashion capitals.
History
The Insubri founded Milan in the early 6th century BCE. Rome conquered it in 222 BCE, renaming it Mediolanum, and the city rose to imperial residence status. The Edict of Toleration was promulgated here during this period. During the communal age, Milan resisted imperial authority, transforming from a Signoria into a duchy that dominated Italian Renaissance political and cultural life.
Spanish rule arrived in the early 16th century, followed by nearly two centuries under Austrian Habsburg control. Enlightened Habsburg policies made Milan a focal point for Italian Enlightenment thought. As capital of Napoleon’s Kingdom of Italy, the city became central to the Risorgimento before joining the unified Kingdom of Italy.
Industrial revolution transformed Milan into a leading economic and financial hub. It formed the “Industrial Triangle” with Turin and Genoa, driving Italian development. Post-war prosperity extended urban and industrial growth to neighboring cities, creating the modern metropolitan area.
What you see
The Duomo di Milano dominates the cityscape with its Gothic architecture and terraces offering panoramic views. The Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie houses Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, one of Western art’s supreme achievements. Sforza Castle, a historical fortress, now contains museums and art collections revealing Milan’s past. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II represents 19th-century architectural ambition and remains one of the world’s oldest shopping galleries.
Cultural significance
Milan serves as Italy’s primary publishing center and a globally recognized music hub. La Scala Theater anchors the city’s renowned lyrical and operatic tradition. The city’s design heritage extends beyond fashion into industrial design, positioning it among Europe’s premier trade fair and design centers. This blend of commerce, art, and innovation defines contemporary Milan’s international influence.
