A tenement house raised after 1898 on the street between Ljubljana’s two main squares, left in 1921 by the physician Ivan Oražen to the Faculty of Medicine. Since 1925 it has housed medical students free of charge.

Wolfova ulica is the short pedestrian street that links Prešeren Square with Congress Square in the centre of Ljubljana. Number 12 stands on its west side, a house of three storeys over a ground floor, entered in the Slovenian register of cultural heritage as a late-historicist tenement building of the turn of the twentieth century. Its history turned in 1921, when the physician Ivan Oražen died and left his property to the young Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana. His will turned the house into a students’ hall, the Oražnov dijaški dom, and its name is still written across the front. Hotel Emonec also gives its address at Wolfova ulica 12.

History
The street took its present name in 1892. Until then it was Gledališka ulica, Theatre Street, after the theatre that stood on it; when the theatre burned down, the street was renamed after Bishop Anton Alojzij Wolf. According to the heritage register, number 12 was built after 1898 on the site of an older house, as a rental house of three upper storeys, with two parallel wings. The register records no architect. Its date falls in the decade in which central Ljubljana was largely rebuilt after the Easter earthquake of 1895.
The house owes its later identity to Ivan Oražen, a Ljubljana physician and city councillor who campaigned for the first medical faculty on Slovenian soil and, after the First World War, became the first president of the regional health council for Slovenia and Istria. His wife Evgenija died of consumption in 1919, and Oražen died in 1921. He left everything he owned to the Faculty, with the instruction that his buildings on Wolfova ulica and Dolenjska cesta should become a students’ hall bearing his name, with free places for poor medical students. The hall on Wolfova ulica took in its first students in October 1925; the one on Dolenjska cesta followed in October 1931.
For a century the house has been lived in by medical and dental students. In 2025 the Faculty marked the centenary of the move with a book, Oražnovci, edited by Stane Repše. Jewellery from Oražen’s estate was reworked in 1963 into the chain of office of the Faculty’s dean.
What you see
The front is rendered in a warm ochre with the mouldings picked out in a slightly paler tone. Above a ground floor of arched shopfronts rise three storeys of paired windows under moulded hoods and small cartouches, closed by a deep cornice on brackets. The end bay in the photograph is treated as a tower: a tall engaged column with a volute capital runs through the two upper storeys, resting on scrolled brackets, and the bay ends in an ornate crested gable above the roofline. The register describes the façade as symmetrical, emphasised by an Ionic column and an attic, and the matching bay at the other end repeats the motif.
Across the band above the first-floor windows runs the lettering Oražnov dijaški dom, and between two windows a small cartouche carries the figure 1869. That is not the date of the house: 1869 is the year of Ivan Oražen’s birth. At street level the arched openings carry dark awnings, and planters and young trees line the paving of the pedestrian street.

Getting there
Wolfova ulica runs between Prešernov trg and Kongresni trg in the pedestrian centre of Ljubljana, and cars cannot reach the door. Ljubljana railway station and the bus station are north of the centre, about a fifteen-minute walk from Prešeren Square along Miklošičeva cesta. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is at Brnik, about 25 kilometres north of the city.
