Overview
Snohetta’s Operahuset slopes Carrara marble straight out of Oslofjord – a roof the public climbs as plaza, glacier-white against the water, with the oak-wrapped auditorium glowing within the glass. Opened 2008, it remade Bjorvika’s docklands and the type itself: the opera house as common ground first, monument second.
History
Norway’s long opera-house debate ended with the competition’s carpet concept – accessibility as architecture; the building won the Mies van der Rohe award 2009 and pulled the barcode towers, Munch museum, and library into the harbour’s new cultural front. Sunbathers, skateboard negotiations, and whale-back strollers proved the roof’s thesis from day one.
Architecture and Design
The marble field’s non-slip relief patterns guide the climb; the wave wall’s oak strips curve acousticly around the 1,364-seat horseshoe. Olafur Eliasson’s perforated cladding lights the backstage tower; She Lies – the steel iceberg sculpture – turns with the tide offshore.
Cultural significance
The Opera reset civic architecture’s ambitions worldwide – the walkable monument – and crowned Norway’s oil-era cultural investment with its most loved public space.
Visiting today
The roof is open always, free; foyer and tours daily, performances year-round. Sunset on the marble with the fjord’s ferries is Oslo’s ritual.

Oslo Central station is five minutes’ walk across the footbridge.
