Jugendstilsenteret — the Swan Pharmacy

The pharmacy built after the fire became the memory-keeper of the whole town: Norway’s National Art Nouveau Centre lives inside Ålesund’s finest Jugendstil building, dragons, swans and all.

At a glance

When Ålesund burned to the ground in January 1904, it was rebuilt in barely three years as Norway’s Art Nouveau town — and the Swan Pharmacy (Svaneapoteket) at Apotekergata 16 became the rebuilding’s masterpiece. Designed by Hagbarth Schytte-Berg and completed between 1905 and 1907, it fuses continental Jugendstil with Norwegian national romanticism: dragon-style carving, native stone, and an interior that survives as the best preserved of the town’s Art Nouveau years. In 1984 it became Ålesund’s first listed Art Nouveau monument, and since 2003 it has housed Jugendstilsenteret, the National Art Nouveau Centre.

History

The fire of 23 January 1904 destroyed the wooden town in a single night and left ten thousand people homeless; the rebuilding that followed, funded with help from across Europe, arrived exactly when young Norwegian architects trained in Germany were fluent in the new style. Schytte-Berg’s pharmacy for the chemist rose at the heart of the new stone town as its most complete architectural statement. The pharmacy dispensed for most of the twentieth century, its carved interiors intact behind the granite facade. Protection came in 1984, and in 2003 the building reopened as Jugendstilsenteret — the national centre for Art Nouveau — whose exhibitions, including the “Time Machine” that retells the night of the fire, make it the natural first stop for understanding why this small fishing town looks like a Jugendstil pattern book.

What you see

The exterior sets rough-hewn native stone against smooth render, with a corner tower and carved ornament in which continental whiplash lines meet Norwegian dragon-style beasts — the national answer to the international style. Inside, the pharmacy officina survives with its curved counters, carved woodwork and glass, the finest preserved Art Nouveau room in town. The museum threads through the building, pairing original interiors with exhibitions on the 1904 fire and the rebuilding; next door, the KUBE art museum shares the block, making the two buildings a single cultural stop.
