Published in April 2022, the Rilke Path represents one of the most significant walking routes overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. The two-kilometre trail connects the hamlets of Duino and Sistiana, historically hosting numerous noblemen, poets, and artists. The path takes its name from poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who resided at Duino Castle in the early twentieth century and found inspiration there to compose his celebrated “Duino Elegies.”
The Trail and Its Natural Setting
The path winds through the Duino Cliffs Natural Reserve, a unique habitat. With minimal elevation change, the walk develops along white Karst limestone rocks overlooking the sea, offering views of the gulf below. The landscape blends Karst limestone with Mediterranean flora: holm oak and hornbeam typical of Mediterranean scrubland, fragrant junipers, sumac shrubs with reddish flowers contrasting the sea’s deep blue, and Karst gentians and cornflowers.
The route passes a Second World War fortification offering a panoramic vantage point, then follows the cliff edge before reaching a final accessible viewpoint for disabled visitors. From this point, visitors glimpse the garden of Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico, an international secondary school founded in 1982 that welcomes more than 180 students from over 80 countries annually.

Duino Castle, historic seat of the princes della Torre e Tasso (Thurn und Taxis), lies a few minutes’ walk from the trail’s end. The castle offers visitors access to its seaside park and a Second World War bunker converted into a small museum displaying period artefacts. The Collegio campus occupies existing structures: classes occur in the former Slovenian primary school, administrative offices and library occupy the former Guardia di Finanza barracks, and an art laboratory dedicated to Erich Hartmann was created from an old stable.

The path, open continuously except for a brief pandemic closure, is best visited during spring through late autumn, particularly at sunset during summer months. The trail’s duration varies considerably given numerous photo stops and panoramic viewing points.
