In 1926, within the terraced hills of Grasse on the French Riviera, entrepreneur Eugène Fuchs established Parfumerie Fragonard. Housed in a historic eighteenth-century perfume atelier and named in homage to Grasse-born painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the house pioneered direct-to-consumer artisanal perfumery, transforming the ancient floral harvest of Provence into an enduring pillar of French cultural patrimony.
The Grasse Terroir: Paying Homage to the Painter of Light
Perched between the Prealps and the Mediterranean Sea, the microclimate of Grasse has nurtured fields of Centifolia rose, jasmine, and orange blossom since the seventeenth century. In 1926, Eugène Fuchs acquired an established industrial perfume workshop on Boulevard Fragonard. While traditional French perfume houses dealt primarily through Paris distributors, Fuchs adopted a direct commercial model: inviting Riviera tourists directly into the factory to witness enfleurage, copper distillation, and master maceration firsthand.
Naming his enterprise after Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806)—the master Rococo painter whose father had been a Grasse glovemaker-perfumer—Fuchs linked his creations directly to French decorative arts and Mediterranean heritage.
Four Generations of Family Heritage: The Historic Usine and Museums
Guided through a century of family leadership by Eugène Fuchs’s descendants—his grandson Jean-François Costa and his wife Hélène Costa, followed by their three daughters: Anne, Agnès, and Françoise Costa—Fragonard remained independent of major luxury conglomerates. The family developed their manufacturing facilities into cultural institutions, creating dedicated museums for perfume bottles, French art collections, and Provençal costumes in Grasse and Paris.
As Parfumerie Fragonard celebrates its 1926–2026 centenary, its historic stills at 20 Boulevard Fragonard in Grasse welcome visitors daily, celebrating Provence’s UNESCO-recognized heritage of perfume plant cultivation and formulation.
