Founded in Genoa in 1917 during the height of the First World War, Lloyd Italico di Assicurazioni e Riassicurazioni was established to safeguard Italian merchant maritime transport and industrial cargoes against the acute perils of Mediterranean submarine warfare.

Maritime Origins and the Perrone Group

The enterprise was incorporated through the concerted initiative of the influential Perrone brothers, directors of the Ansaldo engineering empire, alongside the Società Nazionale di Navigazione. As Allied supply lanes faced intense German U-boat interdiction, Italian shipowners and heavy manufacturers urgently required robust domestic underwriting syndicates. Headquartered in the commercial heart of Genoa, Lloyd Italico specialized in hull and cargo policies, marine insurance, and complex reinsurance operations, quickly establishing a reputation for underwriting solvency across Mediterranean trading routes.

Consolidation and Twentieth-Century Legacy

In 1934, under the guidance of respected underwriter Emilio Borzino, the company orchestrated a substantial capital expansion by absorbing several established Ligurian insurance firms, including L’Ancora, Oceanus, and Ermes. Throughout the interwar and post-war eras, the firm diversified beyond maritime transport into industrial fire, casualty, and life policies, extending its agency network across all Italian provinces. Operating from prestigious executive offices in Via Fieschi and Piazza Dante, the firm stood as a cornerstone of Genoa’s financial district.

Following subsequent corporate acquisitions by Royal Insurance and Toro Assicurazioni, Lloyd Italico entered the Generali Group in 2009, maintaining an autonomous brand identity until its definitive operational merger into Generali Italia in 2016. The historical corporate premises in Via Fieschi remain an integral component of Genoa’s modern business citadel, serving continuing corporate and commercial functions.
