Overview
Kirstenbosch climbs Table Mountain’s eastern slope through the Cape Floral Kingdom – the smallest, densest of Earth’s six floral kingdoms, fynbos found nowhere else – the first botanical garden anywhere dedicated to its country’s indigenous plants alone. King proteas, cycad amphitheatres, and the Boomslang walkway’s serpentine canopy curve compose horticulture’s most dramatic setting.
History
Founded 1913 on Cecil Rhodes’ bequest land (his camphor avenue remains), the garden professionalized Cape botany – Compton herbarium, threatened-species banks – while summer’s sunset concerts on the lawns became Cape Town’s social season. Mandela’s favoured gold protea cultivar carries his name here.
Architecture and Design
Van Riebeeck’s 1660 wild-almond hedge – colonial boundary’s living relic – threads the lower garden; the conservatory shelters Namaqualand succulents. Paths rise to Skeleton Gorge’s forest, Smuts’ favourite ascent of the mountain.
Cultural significance
Kirstenbosch is biodiversity’s showcase garden – the Cape Floral listing’s public face – and Cape Town’s green commons across communities and seasons.
Visiting today
Open daily; spring (September-October) fires the proteas, summer Sundays bring concerts. Allow a half day with the canopy walk and tea garden.
Getting there
Hop-on buses and taxis serve the gate, 13 km from the city centre below Rhodes Drive.
