Overview

Wiblingen’s library hall of 1744 turns the room itself into rococo theatre: marbled columns in rose and sky-blue spiral the gallery, Kuen’s ceiling fresco floats wisdom’s allegories, and carved virtues gesture from the balustrade – the south-German monastic style’s most exuberant set, its inscription over the door promising in quo omnes thesauri sapientiae et scientiae.

History

Benedictines of 1093 raised the baroque rebuilding from 1714; secularization in 1806 took books to Stuttgart and gave the abbey to Wurttemberg’s soldiers and later Ulm’s university medicine. The hall’s restoration returned the spectacle – if fewer folios – to the public; the basilica’s ceiling by Januarius Zick neighbours.

Architecture and Design

The two-storey oval-ended hall choreographs light onto stucco-lustro’s false marble; statues of sciences and church fathers alternate the gallery’s rhythm. The books recede – architecture’s argument that the room itself instructs.

Cultural significance

Wiblingen ranks with Admont and Metten in the rococo library trinity – the genre’s photogenic peak and Ulm’s baroque counterweight to the Munster’s gothic spire.
