University of al-Qarawiyyin, Fez

Overview
Guinness and UNESCO concur: al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri with her merchant inheritance, is the oldest existing continuously operating institution of higher learning on earth. Within Fez’s UNESCO medina, the mosque’s forest of horseshoe arcades, the green-tiled minaret, and the library holding a 9th-century Quran and Ibn Khaldun’s autograph manuscripts carry twelve centuries of scholarship.
History
Maimonides, Ibn Khaldun, and pope-to-be Gerbert of Aurillac (who carried Arabic numerals north) figure in its student lore; Almoravid and Marinid sultans enlarged hall and library. State integration in 1963 modernized degrees; the 2016 library restoration by architect Aziza Chaouni – engineer of its climate and conservation labs – returned the manuscripts’ rooms to working glory, founder and restorer bracketing the story in women’s names.
Architecture and Design
Fourteen naves of painted-wood ceilings spread from the Almoravid mihrab; the Marinid ablutions pavilions echo the Alhambra’s lions. The library’s reading room under cedar muqarnas serves scholars by permission; non-Muslims view the courts from the medina doors.
Cultural significance
Al-Qarawiyyin is learning’s longest thread – madrasa to modern university unbroken – and Fez’s spiritual axis; its founding by a woman patron leads every history of education.
Visiting today
Non-Muslims may view courtyards from the gates; the adjacent Marinid madrasas (Attarine, Bou Inania) open fully and show the style’s splendour. The library admits researchers by application.
