Ullmann Palace (Palatul Ullmann), Oradea

A cool, elegant Secession palace from the years when Oradea built almost nothing but Art Nouveau.

At a glance

The Ullmann Palace is one of the most representative Secession buildings in Oradea. The architect Ferenc Löbl designed it in the Viennese variant of Art Nouveau, and it was completed between 1911 and 1913. Built for the Ullmann family as a commercial and residential palace, it is now in part a boutique hotel.

Key facts

  • Location: central Oradea (Art Nouveau quarter)
  • Architect: Ferenc Löbl
  • Built: 1911–1913
  • Style: Viennese Secession (Art Nouveau)
  • Function: commercial and residential palace (part hotel)

History

As Oradea filled with Secession palaces in the years before the First World War, the Ullmann family commissioned Löbl to build theirs. He worked in the restrained, geometric Viennese strain rather than the floral Hungarian one.

Completed in 1913, it joined the run of Art Nouveau buildings that define the city. Restored, part of it now operates as a boutique hotel, keeping the Secession detailing.

What you see

The façade is composed and elegant: ordered bays, geometric Secession ornament, ironwork balconies and a quiet roofline. It belongs to the Viennese side of the style, a measured counterpoint to Oradea’s more exuberant, flower-covered palaces.
