Overview
George Whitman’s 1951 shop in a 17th-century house opposite Notre-Dame took in 1964 the name of Sylvia Beach’s legendary original – publisher of Ulysses, salon of the Lost Generation – and grew its own legend: the Tumbleweeds, young writers lodged free among the shelves (read a book a day, help hours, write a one-page autobiography) – 30,000 and counting. Be Not Inhospitable to Strangers admonishes over the inner door.
History
Beach’s rue de l’Odeon shop (1919-41) fed Hemingway and printed Joyce till occupation closed it; Whitman’s Mistral-renamed-Shakespeare hosted the Beats – Ginsberg读, Burroughs researched. Daughter Sylvia (named for Beach) modernized без taming: festivals, the cafe, and the wishing well’s coins among Whitman’s pancakes’ memory.
Architecture and Design
Crooked stairs climb book-walled rooms to the library where typewriters and the piano serve residents; beam ceilings and mirror-notes layer seven decades’ graffiti of gratitude. The green shopfront’s Kilometer Zero view of the cathedral is its own poem.
Cultural significance
The shop incarnates expatriate letters’ Paris – Beach’s modernism to the Beats to today’s pilgrims – bookselling as hospitality’s art.
Visiting today
