Overview

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Lome is the principal monument of the brief German colonial period in Togo – a Neo-Gothic hall church consecrated in 1902, built by the Steyler missionaries with materials shipped from Germany: structural steel from Bremen, facing bricks from Hamburg, and stained glass from the Rhineland. Its slender spire and striped ochre-and-white facade preside over the markets of central Lome.

History

Germany ruled Togoland for barely three decades (1884-1914), promoting it as a model colony; the cathedral was its spiritual flagship, completed in eleven months. After the First World War the territory passed to France, and the church continued as the seat of the archdiocese of Lome. Restorations have preserved the German glass and the original bells through more than a century of tropical weather and political change.

Architecture and Design

The church is a three-aisled basilica with a single west tower and spire, pointed-arch windows, and buttressed walls whose painted banding gives the Gothic skeleton a West African brightness. The prefabricated steel roof trusses – an export technology of imperial Germany – allowed the rapid construction; the interior keeps its neo-Gothic altars and Stations of the Cross.

Cultural significance

The cathedral is the oldest major building in Lome and the emblem of Togolese Catholicism, which counts a third of the population. Standing beside the Grand Marche and the fetish and fabric stalls, it embodies the layered religious and commercial life of the capital.

Visiting today

Open daily for Mass and visits; Sunday services with Ewe-language choirs fill the nave. The Grand Marche, the beach boulevard, and the National Museum are within a short walk.

Getting there

The cathedral stands at the heart of the Lome grid, two blocks from the Atlantic shore; taxis and zemidjan motorcycle taxis reach it from anywhere in the city in minutes.
