Overview
The Mahaweli river loops almost full circle around Peradeniya’s 59 hectares – Kandyan royalty’s pleasure park that British botany refounded in 1821 as Asia’s exemplary tropical garden: the orchid house’s thousand blooms, giant Burma bamboo creaking overhead, Cannonball avenue’s temple-flower curiosities, and the royal-palm colonnade every Sri Lankan album includes.
History
King Wickramabahu III kept court here in the 14th century; British science made the garden coffee’s, then tea’s, trial plot – the island’s economy germinated on these lawns. Lord Mountbatten’s South East Asia Command headquartered among the trees in 1944-45, war planning under the figs. The suspension bridge and herbarium continue research’s line.
Architecture and Design
Avenue planting structures the loop – palmyra, cabbage palms, the double coconuts’ slow enormity; the Javan fig’s single canopy shades 2,500 square metres. Flying-fox colonies stripe the river trees at dusk.
Cultural significance
Peradeniya joins Kandy’s sacred city (UNESCO) as the island’s living collection – science, empire, and leisure’s strata in one river bend – and South Asia’s benchmark botanic landscape.
