Overview

Fleeing Napoleon with court and crown, Dom Joao landed in 1808 and planted a garden – acclimatizing spices and the Mauritius royal palm whose descendants now colonnade the Avenue of Royal Palms, 134 specimens of 30 metres framing Corcovado’s Christ. The Jardim Botanico’s 140 hectares blend collection beds into Tijuca’s Atlantic forest where toucans audit the taxonomy.

History

The first palm – Palma Mater – sprouted from a seed smuggled past colonial monopoly; lightning took it in 1972, lineage continues. Empire’s botanists (Glaziou’s landscaping hand), the republic’s research institute, and UNESCO’s biosphere frame embedded the garden in Rio’s green identity; orchid and bromeliad houses keep Brazil’s flora at study.

Architecture and Design

Imperial gates, the Frei Leandro lake’s Victoria lilies, and the cast-iron fountain compose the historic axis; trails climb to forest where marmosets raid. The avenue’s perspective is Rio’s calmest grandeur below the favela-free ridgeline.

Cultural significance

The garden marks the court-in-exile’s civilizing program and Brazilian science’s cradle – imperial botany’s southern showpiece, the carioca Sunday’s green cathedral.
