Overview
The Royal Portuguese Reading Cabinet – founded 1837 by Portuguese immigrants for their community’s letters – built in 1887 its jewel: a Neo-Manueline hall whose carved jacaranda galleries climb three storeys to an iron skylight’s rose, 350,000 volumes making the greatest Portuguese-language collection outside Portugal. Lists of the world’s most beautiful libraries rarely omit it.
History
The facade quotes Lisbon’s Jeronimos – the discoveries’ style for a diaspora’s pride; Eca de Queiros’ first editions and Camoes’ 1572 Lusiadas anchor the rarities. Still a private society serving public readers, the Gabinete keeps Portuguese letters’ embassy in Brazil’s old capital.
Architecture and Design
Limestone armillary spheres and navigators’ portals announce the theme; within, the rose window’s light falls on the altar of the catalogue – the room composing itself as nave. Chandelier and galleries’ crockets photograph like Manueline lace.
Cultural significance
The Gabinete is the Portuguese Atlantic’s monument – migration’s gift back to the language – and centro’s secret splendour a block from the Carioca crowds.
