Overview
The National History Museum of Moldova in Chisinau occupies a 1964 Soviet Classicist building on the central Stefan cel Mare Boulevard. The museum houses the largest collection of Moldovan archaeological, historical, and numismatic artifacts in the world, including the famous Cucuteni culture pottery and figurines (5500-2750 BC), the gold hoard of Pietroasele, and exhibits on the 1940 Soviet annexation of Bessarabia. Moldova’s complex history – Dacian tribes, Roman Dacia, medieval principality, Ottoman vassalage, Russian Empire (Bessarabia), Romanian unification (1918-1940), Soviet Republic (1944-1991), independence – is traced through the collection. The museum shares its premises with the National Art Museum of Moldova.
