History
Construction began in 1830 under commission of the Prussian kings and continued through 1930, following a unified architectural master plan developed by five architects. Since German reunification, the Island has undergone systematic rebuilding and extension, culminating in the 2019 opening of the James Simon Gallery by a sixth architect.
