Overview

The Grand Splendid opened 1919 as Recoleta’s theatre – Gardel recorded for its label upstairs, radio’s first Argentine concerts broadcast from the boxes – and in 2000 became El Ateneo’s flagship: books bank the stalls, readers occupy gilt boxes, and the stage’s cafe serves beneath Orlandi’s armistice fresco. National Geographic’s world’s-most-beautiful-bookshop crown stuck.

History

Impresario Glucksmann’s house premiered tango’s stars and the city’s first sound films; cinema decades wore the velvet before the bookshop’s rescue conversion preserved every moulding. A million visitors yearly browse where audiences sat – retail as heritage’s second act.

Architecture and Design

The horseshoe’s four tiers, caryatid-flanked proscenium, and the dome’s painted peace survive intact; reading chairs in the boxes offer the city’s best free seats. The balustrades’ sightlines now sell their view of books.

Cultural significance

El Ateneo argues adaptive reuse’s happiest case – tango’s palace turned literature’s – and Buenos Aires’ bookshop-density crown (most per capita worldwide) wears it as jewel.
